The Awakening--Final Essay Questions

The following questions may be on the exam. Be prepared to discuss the prompt in a well-developed essay.

1. Chapter 36 outlines Edna's and Robert's last interactions. Discuss the high points, and any low points of their encounter. How is this "visit" different than previous visits, and how does is symbolize "closure" for Edna?

2. Chapter 37 captures Edna's visit to the Ratignolle house. Madame Ratignolle is sick. Discuss how their relationship and friendship has changed. Reflect on Edna's internal conflict while being at the Ratignolle house. Lastly, discuss the importance of Madame Ratignolle's words, "Think of the children, Edna. Oh think of the children! Remember them!" (Chopin, 149).

3. Reflect on the repetition provided in chapter 39. What is its importance? What words, passages, are repeated, and to what purpose? Use these repetitions to reflect on Edna's journey, and her final escape.

October 5th--What did you do with your long weekend?
September 18th--If you could travel to any planet, which would you go, and what would you do when you got there?
September 17th--If you could create your own exclusive group/club, what would it be, what would you name it, and what would be its purpose?
September 16th--If you could be anywhere right now, where would you be?
September 15th--Do you believe in any sort of God? If not, do you think you might still pray in a life-threatening situation?
September 14th--Who is the most important person in your life? Why is he/she so important?
September 11th--If you could take a one month trip anywhere in the world and money would be no object, where would you go and what would you do?
September 10th--What do you strive for most in life?
September 9th--Would you like an identical twin? Why or why not?
September 8th--What did you do for labor day?
September 4th--When did you get yourself in the biggest mess by telling a lie? What do you think would have happened if you had just told the truth?
September 3rd--If you could be invisible for a day, what would you do?
September 2nd--Some adults have a lot of trouble enjoying themselves. If you were asked to give them some advice about how to play and have more fun, what would you say?
September 1st--If you were alone and had only a few minutes to hide from crooks who were about to break into your house, where would you hide? What is the best hiding place?
August 31st--What would you do if everyone in your family forgot your birthday?
August 28th--If all your best friends were willing to be absolutely honest and tell you exactly what they liked abd disliked about you, would you want them to do so? Explain.
August 27th--Do you think boys or girls have it easier? Explain.
August 26th--If you were the ruler of the world and you could have anything you wanted as well as have people do anything you wanted, do you think you would get greedy and mean or would you be a good and fair ruler? Explain.
